The Connection Between Violence and Mental Illness

Photo Credit-MatchStickFriday morning, January 25, the Treatment Advocacy Center Policy Director Brian Stettin appeared on “Radio Times,” a live call-in program on Philadelphia’s NPR affiliate, WHYY (90.9 FM) to discuss the need for reform in the mental health system. Joe Rogers, President of the Mental Health Association of Pennsylvania, and Mark Salzer, Professor of Rehabilitation Sciences at Temple University also participated.

The topic of debate during the first few minutes of the discussion focused on the link between mental illness and violence. Anti-stigma supporters are adamant about the recent media coverage regarding the portrayal of mental illness being connected to violence. Supporters of stigma movements are coming out of the woodwork to disavowal this portrayal. However, by doing this, supporters of anti-stigma movements could be contributing more to the problem than the solution.

However, supporters of gun reform and assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) have been pegged perpetrators of stigma. As a result, people afraid of unnecessary stigma associated with mental illness are closing their ears to the real problem haunting society.
