The mental health system is guilty of using unnecessary jargon and diagnostic language to communicate with parents, families, individuals, and caregivers. For example, NOS is often connected to a so-called diagnosis when an individual does not fully fit the diagnostic category. NOS means None Otherwise Specified and often means that a clinician cannot fit the individual under the criteria of that mental health conditions. An individual who appears to be depressed may not show severe or even moderate signs of depression and so would immediately be diagnosed as Mood Disorder, NOS. This would mean that the individual may only show some symptoms but not enough to be diagnosed with the full disorder.
