Defense mechanism protect us from perceived threat. That threat may be something minor or it may be something major. But the defense mechanism is being used to protect you, minimize a threat, or deflect the truth. Defense mechanisms are also used by many adults who have been the victim of childhood trauma.
When a child is traumatized and not properly helped/healed it is very easy for them to “create” their own way of coping. That “coping” may include a series of defense mechanisms that ultimately brings harm, emotional detachment, and further trauma.
In this video, I will be discussing 3 categories of defense mechanisms including some of Sigmund Freud’s logical defense mechanisms we all may use.
